History

In late 1961, approximately thirty families came together to found the parish of Saint Stefanos in St. Petersburg, Florida. Many of those founding families had been making the journey to Saint John the Baptist Church in Tampa or Saint Nicholas Cathedral in Tarpon Springs for their Orthodox worship, and the establishment of a parish centered in southern Pinellas County brought the ancient faith closer to home for the Greek Orthodox faithful scattered across that part of the Tampa Bay area. In the early days of the parish, services were held at Saint Andrew's Russian Orthodox Church in St. Petersburg, a gesture of Pan-Orthodox hospitality that sustained the community while it worked toward a building of its own.

The building and dedication of the church was completed in 1968, giving the Saint Stefanos community its permanent home at 3600 76th Street North. The sanctuary is adorned with large hand-painted icons from Greece, gold and crystal kandilia imported from the island of Corfu, and cherry wood pews that give the interior a warmth befitting the Florida community it serves. The Holy Altar enshrines the relics of Saint Haralambos the Priest-Martyr, Saint Anysia the Martyr, and the Holy Fathers at Raitho in Sinai. On April 17, 1988, the Sunday of Thomas, the church was formally consecrated by Bishop Isaiah of Aspendos, then Chancellor of the Archdiocese and later Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver, with the parish pastor Father Andrew Maginas presiding and calling the consecration a new chapter in the life of the community.

In February 2001 a new Educational Building was dedicated, housing the church office, priest's office, a small library, and several classrooms for Sunday School, Greek School, and the parish's many ministries and events throughout the week.
