History
During the early decades of the twentieth century, Wilmington's population surged as the city took on growing importance as a port city during the two World Wars. To accommodate the large influx of Orthodox Christians who had made Wilmington their home, a Board of Trustees formed in 1943 and began the work of planning and developing what would become the Church of Saint Nicholas.
In 1945 the first sanctuary, located downtown at the corner of Second and Orange Streets, was completed, opening its doors that June after the cornerstone was laid on August 31. A few months later, the faithful purchased a two-story home next door, which served as church offices, classrooms, and the parsonage for the parish priest. For more than three decades, this downtown building was the spiritual home of Wilmington's Greek Orthodox community.
As the congregation grew, the need for a larger space became increasingly apparent, and in 1979 the parish made the decision to relocate. The downtown property was sold, eventually becoming home to the city's Children's Museum, and the parish purchased its current campus on College Road on October 15, 1980.
The choice of patron saint for the new parish in 1943 had been an easy one. Saint Nicholas, venerated throughout the Christian world and especially honored in coastal regions as the patron saint of seafarers, was a fitting protector for a community rooted in Wilmington's identity as the Port City. In October 2003 the church underwent a major renovation and was re-consecrated, with thirty-five new icons installed in the sanctuary alongside gold-plated chandeliers and intricately carved wooden furnishings crafted in Greece, along with the church's reception of Holy Relics of several saints.
Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at 608 South College Street in Wilmington serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the coastal Carolina region as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a pillar and beacon of Orthodox Christianity in southeastern North Carolina for more than eight decades.
