History
Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church of Burlington, North Carolina traces its beginnings to 1969, when a group of Orthodox Christians in the Alamance County area began planning and raising funds for a Greek Orthodox church to serve the faithful of the Piedmont. The community's organizing efforts came to fruition on November 28, 1971, when the opening day ceremony was held with a Divine Liturgy led by Bishop Iakovos, attended by a number of local dignitaries including the Governor of North Carolina, a mark of the welcome the broader Burlington community extended to the new parish.
The early pastoral care of the parish was provided by visiting and retired clergy until 1978, when Father Panagiotis T. Vlahos, a retired priest from Winston-Salem, was appointed by the Archdiocese to serve the community and remained for twelve years. At his suggestion and with the consent of the community, his son succeeded him: in 1990 Father George P. Vlahos was ordained to the priesthood and appointed by the Archdiocese to serve on a full-time basis, a pastoral continuity between father and son that shaped the life of the parish across more than three decades. Father George's steady leadership culminated on April 28, 2007, in the official consecration of the church by the Archdiocese, raising its status from a mission to a regular parish church. In 1991 the parish expanded its campus with the addition of a Fellowship Hall, providing space for the community and cultural programs that give the parish its full institutional life.
