History

Christ the Savior Greek Orthodox Church of Spring Hill, Florida traces its origins to a small group of Orthodox Christians who were worshipping on the former grounds of a Greek Orthodox Youth Camp in Brooksville, Florida. Early in 2002, the Board of the Camp transferred the property to the mission after the existing mortgage had been paid off, and with that transfer Christ the Savior Greek Orthodox Church formally began functioning with the blessings of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta.

 

The parish is dedicated to Christ the Savior, whose feast day is the Presentation of Christ at the Temple, celebrated each February 2, and is a genuinely Pan-Orthodox community. Its stewards and friends trace their roots to several traditionally Orthodox nationalities, and many are converts from other Christian traditions or those encountering Orthodoxy for the first time. Most services are conducted in English, with small portions in Greek, Slavic, Arabic, Romanian, and Albanian as reminders of the community's diverse Orthodox heritages, with every language repeated in English so that all can understand and participate. Service texts are provided to the entire congregation so that all can sing the hymns and recite the responses together, reflecting a vision of liturgical participation that has shaped the parish's identity from its earliest days.

 

The mission is located on Spring Hill Drive in Hernando County and draws its faithful not only from the surrounding communities of Hernando County but from areas to the south, north, and west, given its easy access to Tampa, St. Petersburg, and the Nature Coast counties. In addition to its liturgical life the parish maintains philanthropic outreach through a partnership with the nearby Pine Grove Elementary School and supports an Orthodox missionary working in Africa.
