History
Saint John Chrysostom Greek Orthodox Church of Hobe Sound, Florida began with a simple idea among a handful of families who recognized a significant gap in Orthodox Christian ministry along the Treasure Coast. On April 1, 2001, a small group of faithful met to discuss forming a church in Martin County, where the nearest parishes were located in West Palm Beach and Fort Pierce, leaving Orthodox families in the region without a local spiritual home. Among the driving forces behind the effort were Murad and Katherine Coury and John and Joanna Laskaris, who gathered interest from the community through meetings often held at the original Flamingo Restaurant in Stuart, owned by the Laskaris family.
After years of persistence and growing support, their efforts were formally recognized on November 13, 2002, when Bishop Alexios of Atlanta granted approval to establish what would become Saint John Chrysostom Greek Orthodox Church. On January 26, 2003, the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in a modest 1,500-square-foot storefront off Gay Street in Stuart, an unassuming beginning for a community that would grow steadily through the following years. In September 2009, Bishop Alexios granted permission for the parish to acquire property and buildings in Hobe Sound, and the following month services were held at the new location for the first time. On January 29, 2012, the parish's priest celebrated the first Divine Liturgy in the current Hobe Sound church, completing the community's transition from its Stuart storefront origins to a permanent home on the barrier island.
In 2026 the parish submitted detailed site plans and architectural drawings to Martin County for a new permanent church on its U.S. 1 property in Hobe Sound, working toward the construction of a purpose-built sanctuary that will serve the community for generations. The Philoptochos ministry is active in outreach throughout Martin County, feeding the hungry, supporting single mothers, providing school supplies, and assisting veterans.
