History

The Parish of Saint Barbara traces its formal beginnings to July 11, 1945, when a group of Greek Orthodox immigrants in the Durham-Chapel Hill area gathered to organize themselves into a Greek Orthodox parish. From that organizational meeting emerged a steering committee chaired by Jerry A. Spathis, whose work led to the first general assembly of local Greek Orthodox faithful on September 16, 1945. A year later, on October 26, 1946, the parish was formally incorporated under North Carolina law, giving the community legal standing as a religious body.

The prayerful words used by that initial steering committee capture the spirit of the founders well: a request that Almighty God enlighten them so that, as individuals and as a committee, they might bring to completion with full success the task they had undertaken, always faithful to the divine traditions and teachings of the Church. That sense of purpose carried the small Durham-Chapel Hill community through its founding years and into the decades of growth that followed.

Today the parish is well known throughout the Research Triangle for its annual Greek Festival, which draws thousands of visitors each year to experience Greek food, music, dance, and hospitality, with a portion of festival proceeds supporting local charities and humanitarian relief efforts.

St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church at 8306 NC Highway 751 in Durham serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the Durham-Chapel Hill area as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a community whose founders gathered eight decades ago with a simple prayer for faithfulness to the traditions of the Church.
