History
Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Pensacola, Florida was established in the early years of the twentieth century by Greek immigrants who had made their way to the Gulf Coast port city, one of the oldest cities in the United States and a natural destination for Greek seafarers and merchants drawn by its harbor and commercial opportunities. The first Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church was built in 1910 at the corner of Wright and Reus Streets in downtown Pensacola, giving the Greek Orthodox faithful of the Florida Panhandle their first permanent house of worship and establishing a community that would serve the region for more than a century.
For more than four decades that original church at Wright and Reus Streets was the spiritual home of the Greek Orthodox faithful of Pensacola and the surrounding communities, sustaining parish life through the hardships of two World Wars and the Great Depression. By 1954 the community had grown beyond what the original building could accommodate, and a new church was constructed at 1720 West Garden Street, the address that has been the Annunciation's home ever since. The parish also served as the mother church for the communities it helped establish across the Florida Panhandle, including the Saint Demetrios mission at Mary Esther, whose founding story traces directly to families connected to the Pensacola parish.
The annual Pensacola Greek Festival, one of the longest-running Hellenic cultural celebrations in the Florida Panhandle, has drawn the broader Pensacola community to the Garden Street campus each October for more than fifty years, sharing Greek food, music, dance, and the hospitality for which the community has long been known.
