History
In 1973 a small group of Orthodox faithful in Fort Myers began gathering in homes and restaurants to develop a strategy for establishing a Greek Orthodox church in Southwest Florida. In those earliest days, without a building of their own, the community held services at Saint Michael's Episcopal Church on Sanibel Island, one of several locations used through the mid-1970s as the congregation slowly built its numbers and resources.
By August 1976 the community had grown sufficiently to purchase property on Cypress Lake Drive, and later that same year was granted Missionary Parish status by the Archdiocese. In April 1977 the first service was conducted in a modular building on the new property, a modest but meaningful milestone that gave the Southwest Florida Greek Orthodox faithful a place of their own for the first time. The community continued to grow and mature through the following decade and a half, and on January 17, 1993, the church was formally consecrated, completing its canonical standing and marking the fulfillment of the vision that small group of families had carried since their first meetings around restaurant tables in 1973.
In March 2015 the parish completed the Grace Conidaris Education Building, which includes the priest's office, administrative offices, and five classrooms. In November 2018 the Father Arthur Kontinos Hall was completely renovated, providing a beautiful space for fellowship. The parish swells with seasonal visitors during the winter months as Orthodox faithful from across the United States and Canada winter in the Fort Myers area, giving the community its distinctive character as a year-round parish with deep roots in the Southwest Florida community.
