History

The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Winston-Salem, North Carolina is celebrating its 90th anniversary, placing its founding in the mid-1930s, when Greek immigrant families in the Piedmont Triad first organized to preserve their Orthodox Christian faith and Hellenic heritage in the heart of North Carolina. What began as an immigrant oasis for the Greek families who had made Winston-Salem their home has grown over nine decades into one of the most vibrant and diverse Greek Orthodox communities in the American South.

Through the generations, the parish built the full institutional life of a thriving Orthodox community, establishing ministries for all ages, a Philoptochos Society devoted to charitable works, youth programs, and a Greek School to pass the language and culture of Greece to the community's children. The Annunciation has served not only as the spiritual home of its own growing membership but as a hub of Orthodox witness in the broader Piedmont region, with its presiding priest having played a foundational role in the establishment of Saint Luke Greek Orthodox Church in Mooresville and serving as Vicar of the Northeast Conference of the Atlanta Metropolis.

The parish is home to approximately 400 families representing the full breadth of the Orthodox world, including Greeks, Russians, Ukrainians, Serbians, Romanians, Middle Easterners, and a growing number of converts, a reflection of the universal character of the ancient faith in an American community that has evolved far beyond its Greek immigrant origins. Services are conducted in both Greek and English, and the Annunciation Foundation supports charitable works in the Winston-Salem community alongside the parish's ministry to its own faithful.

The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church at 435 Keating Drive in Winston-Salem serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the Piedmont Triad as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
