History
Saint Christopher Hellenic Orthodox Church of Peachtree City, Georgia has its roots in a vision that predates the parish itself by more than a decade. In the early 1990s, families from Coweta and Fayette Counties in the southern metro Atlanta area approached the Bishop of Atlanta and the Metropolis Chancellor to seek blessings for establishing a Greek Orthodox church that would welcome Pan-Orthodox faithful in the South Atlanta area. Because there were too few families and no available clergy at the time, the decision was made to wait for a more opportune moment.
That moment came in 2003. Father George Tsahakis, then serving as Chancellor of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta, worked with those who still held the vision for a mission parish in Peachtree City, and Metropolitan Alexios gave his blessing. The parish's first worship services, Orthros and Divine Liturgy, were celebrated on Sunday, October 26, 2003, the Feast of Saint Demetrios the Holy Great Martyr and Myrrh-Streamer.
The early community was truly nomadic. Each Sunday before 7:00 a.m., the faithful would gather at the Fayette Family Branch YMCA in Fayetteville, unpack cars loaded with liturgical items and church supplies, hold services and fellowship, and then repack everything until the following week. After a year of this arrangement, parishioners offered their volunteer labor and financial contributions to renovate a warehouse space at 313 Dividend Drive in Peachtree City, which has served as the parish's home ever since, a converted space fitted with traditional Orthodox furnishings, iconography, fellowship space, and classrooms.
The parish received its permanent name through an act of generosity. Charlie Masterpolis, a benefactor from Savannah, Georgia, approached the parish early in its life and expressed his desire to make a major gift toward the purchase of land for a permanent church. Through his donation, combined with substantial contributions from parishioners, the parish acquired a ten-acre parcel on Ebenezer Road near the city limits of Peachtree City. Metropolitan Alexios approved the site, and the mission was formally named Saint Christopher Hellenic Orthodox Church in honor of Charlie's beloved father, Christos. The parish celebrates its Patronal Feast Day on May 9, the Feast of Saint Christopher the Martyr of Lycea.
Within three years of purchasing the Ebenezer Road property, the parish paid off the mortgage entirely and began planning for a permanent multi-purpose building to serve as worship space, classrooms, and fellowship hall. The community has grown to between 80 and 100 families, with the annual GreekFest and other fundraising efforts supporting the building campaign. Today, Saint Christopher Hellenic Orthodox Church at 313 Dividend Drive serves the southern Atlanta metropolitan counties of Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Henry, Spalding, and South Fulton as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta, welcoming Orthodox Christians of every background and ethnicity into a vibrant and growing community of faith.
