History

Saint George Chapel of Brunswick, Georgia was built in 1967 through the efforts of some of the most dedicated Greek Orthodox faithful in the Brunswick area. Rather than continue attending services in non-Orthodox churches or making the long commute to Saint Paul's Greek Orthodox Church in Savannah, a small group of determined parishioners pooled their energy and resources to erect a beautiful chapel at 401 Newcastle Street, a few blocks from downtown Brunswick in the vicinity of Saint Simons Island and Sea Island. Fathers Tom Paris and Frank Kirlangitis were instrumental in building and equipping the chapel for services, and a succession of devoted priests from Saint Paul's in Savannah traveled one Saturday a month to celebrate the Divine Liturgy and minister to the Brunswick faithful whenever needs arose.

In 2008, the chapel underwent interior and exterior renovations that gave the house of worship a fresh and renewed appearance, with upgraded kitchen and bathroom facilities, new tile, and a beautiful red carpet laid throughout the chapel, preserving the sacred character of the space for the generations that followed.

Saint George Chapel celebrated its fiftieth anniversary as a landmark of Orthodox Christianity on the Georgia coast, a small but steadfast community whose faithfulness has ensured that the ancient Christian faith has a home among the marshes and barrier islands of the Georgia Golden Isles.
