History

Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Mobile, Alabama celebrated its first Divine Liturgy on January 26, 1912, making it one of the oldest Greek Orthodox communities in the American South and the second Greek Orthodox parish established in the State of Alabama, following the Birmingham church founded in 1906. In its earliest years the Mobile church was served periodically by a priest who traveled from Florida, a common arrangement for small Southern communities without the resources to support a resident pastor, until the parish grew sufficiently to hire its first permanent priest and teacher.

For more than a century the Annunciation community has served as the center of Greek Orthodox and Hellenic cultural life in Mobile and the surrounding communities of southwestern Alabama. The parish is situated at 50 South Ann Street in the historic heart of Mobile, a port city whose long history of cultural diversity made it a natural home for Greek immigrants who arrived in the early twentieth century drawn by the city's commercial opportunities along the Gulf Coast.
