History
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Augusta, Georgia holds a place of unique distinction in the history of Orthodox Christianity in the American South. The church building constructed at 953 Telfair Street in 1921 is believed to be the oldest religious building of Greek Orthodox design in the entire Southeastern United States, a living testament to the early presence of the Greek Orthodox faith in the region.
The community's roots reach back to 1911, when Augusta had no organized Greek Orthodox parish. That year, a group of 162 Greeks, assisted by Father Dimitrios Petrides, a Greek Orthodox priest from Atlanta, came together to formally organize the first Greek Orthodox Church in Augusta and receive its official charter. 1911 is recognized as the birth year of the parish. For a decade the community built its foundation, and in 1921 the church building on Telfair Street was completed, its design reflecting the Orthodox architectural tradition and closely resembling the building as it appears today.
That original building, still standing more than a century later, places Holy Trinity among the most historically significant Greek Orthodox properties in the South. The church has served the Augusta community through the full sweep of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, growing from those 162 founding members into a vibrant parish of more than 500 families. It belongs to the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Augusta Downtown Historic District.
Today, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church continues its ministry at 953 Telfair Street in downtown Augusta, offering liturgical services, educational programs, and philanthropic outreach to the community, as well as its beloved annual Greek Festival that brings the traditions and flavors of Greece to the heart of the CSRA.
