History
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Augustine, Florida worships in the nation's oldest city, a place whose connection to the history of Greek Orthodoxy in America stretches back to the earliest colonial era. In 1768, the first Greek Orthodox Christians to settle in the New World established a colony near what is now Saint Augustine, and one of the original buildings in which they gathered for religious services still stands today, preserved as Saint Photios National Shrine, the first Greek Orthodox shrine in the Americas and a national religious landmark commemorating the pioneers of Orthodox Christianity on American soil.
The formal Greek Orthodox parish community of Saint Augustine came into being much later, as more Greek families moved to north Florida through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As their numbers grew, they organized and incorporated a Hellenic Society, and in 1976 that society raised enough money to purchase a small church in downtown Saint Augustine, giving the community its first permanent house of worship. The parish continued to grow through the following decades, and looking toward the future, the community purchased property on County Road 214, five miles west of downtown Saint Augustine. In 2007 a new church, social hall, and classrooms were completed on that property, giving the faithful a purpose-built campus worthy of the ancient tradition they carry.
The Saint Augustine community has evolved from its original Hellenic roots into a diverse Pan-Orthodox parish, welcoming Orthodox Christians of many backgrounds alongside the Greek-American families who founded it, all gathered in one of the most historically resonant settings for Orthodox Christianity in the entire United States.
