History
Saint Elizabeth the Wonderworker Greek Orthodox Church of Gainesville, Florida has served the Orthodox Christian community of north-central Florida since 1975, establishing a permanent Orthodox presence in a university city where the faithful come from many corners of the world. The parish holds a distinctive dedication to Saint Elizabeth the Wonderworker, a ninth-century Byzantine abbess venerated throughout the Orthodox Church for her extraordinary gift of healing and her compassion for the sick and suffering, whose feast day is celebrated on April 24.
The parish's location in Gainesville, home to the University of Florida and Santa Fe Community College, has given it a uniquely dynamic character from its founding. Orthodox Christian students from the University of Florida, Santa Fe Community College, Florida Gateway College, and institutions across the region have long found a spiritual home at Saint Elizabeth's, alongside military servicemembers and veterans stationed or residing in the Gainesville area and the permanent Greek and Greek-American families who form the parish's core. That combination of the transient energy of a university community and the stability of long-rooted families has defined the parish's character for fifty years.
The community worships at 5129 NW 53rd Avenue in Gainesville, gathering for Sunday Orthros at nine in the morning followed by the Divine Liturgy at ten, with fellowship at coffee hour afterward, and livestreaming the Divine Liturgy for those who cannot attend in person.
