History
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Tulsa, Oklahoma was incorporated on May 20, 1925, by Greek immigrants who had settled in the city and were determined to preserve their religious faith and Hellenic heritage in the heart of Oklahoma. After launching a community-wide fundraising drive, the founding members purchased three city lots at Eleventh Street and South Guthrie Avenue in Tulsa, where they set about building their first sanctuary. Groundbreaking was held in May 1927, and the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated there on March 23, 1928, a date the parish would commemorate for generations.
From those early years the community built a rich institutional life, establishing organizations that supported Greek families in Tulsa and fostering the entrepreneurial spirit that characterized many Greek immigrants of the era. The annual Greek Festival, which grew into one of the oldest ethnic festivals in Tulsa, became a beloved tradition through which the community shared its culture, cuisine, and faith with the broader city.
By the late 1960s, the construction of the Broken Arrow Expressway forced the relocation of the original church. The congregation adapted without missing a step, building a new sanctuary at 1222 South Guthrie Avenue, just a few blocks from the original site. The first service in the new building was held on September 21, 1969. Before the move, the community sealed a time capsule that would remain buried for more than half a century, rediscovered and opened during the parish's centennial celebration in May 2025, offering a remarkable window into the community's life at that pivotal moment in its history.
In 2025 Holy Trinity celebrated its centennial with a full weekend of events including a historical exhibition tracing the Greek community's journey decade by decade, a memorial service at the Greek Hill at Rose Hill Cemetery, and a banquet at the Mayo Hotel at which proclamations were read from the Governor of Oklahoma, a United States Congressman, and the Mayor of Tulsa. A Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Metropolitan Constantine, and the community looked ahead to future plans for a traditional Byzantine-style church to serve its growing membership.
Today, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church continues its ministry at 1222 South Guthrie Avenue in Tulsa as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver, a century-old community of faith that has shaped the spiritual and cultural life of the Greek-American presence in Oklahoma from the oil boom era to the present day.
