History

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of Oklahoma City holds a century of history as the center of Greek Orthodox life in the state of Oklahoma. On September 25, 1914, Greek Orthodox Christians in Oklahoma City established a congregation called the Brotherhood of Saint George. Three years later, by 1917, the State of Oklahoma had granted the community its formal charter as Saint George Greek Orthodox Church.

In 1921, having raised sufficient funds, the community purchased land and built its first church building, a house of worship that would serve the congregation for more than sixty years. Members of the church were bombarded with bids for the construction from a number of companies. John Sinopoulo, overseeing the selection, chose Gross Construction Company without hesitation for their reputation for fair treatment and quality work. Through those early decades the parish hosted traditional Greek festivals open to the public and led community outreach programs that introduced Oklahoma City residents to Greek culture and the Orthodox faith.

After more than sixty years of service, the original building had been outgrown, and around 1983 the decision was made to build a new home for the community. The new church opened in 1985, and on Christmas Eve of 1988 the congregation dedicated a new addition to the sanctuary, its doors opened by founders of the original Saint George Church in a moment that marked, in the words of the presiding priest, not merely a physical step into something new but a spiritual and holy step forward.

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church at 2101 NW 145th Street in Oklahoma City serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the greater Oklahoma City area as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, the pioneering Greek Orthodox community of the Sooner State for more than a century.
