History

Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church of Holladay, Utah is the second of two churches that together form the Greek Orthodox Church of Greater Salt Lake, alongside the historic Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in downtown Salt Lake City. The Greek Orthodox community of the Salt Lake Valley, one of the oldest in the American West, traces its roots to the waves of Greek immigrants who came to Utah in the early twentieth century to work in the mining and smelting industries.

As the Greater Salt Lake Greek Orthodox community grew through the mid-twentieth century and the population of Salt Lake County spread southward into the suburbs, the need for a second worship site became apparent. The Prophet Elias Church complex was established in Holladay off of Highland Drive to serve the Orthodox faithful of the southern Salt Lake Valley, offering a second location for the community's liturgical and parish life while remaining part of the unified Greek Orthodox Church of Greater Salt Lake. Its interior, colorful and ornate in the Byzantine tradition, offers the same spiritual richness as the historic downtown cathedral in a suburban setting more accessible to parishioners in the southern valley.
