History

Saint Anna Greek Orthodox Church of Sandy, Utah is the third Greek Orthodox parish in the Salt Lake Valley, joining the historic Holy Trinity Cathedral and Prophet Elias Church to form a fuller Orthodox Christian presence in the greater metropolitan area. The parish was formally recognized as a community of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America when then-newly installed Archbishop Elpidophoros granted its first charter, a milestone that marked the beginning of an ambitious young congregation's journey toward a permanent home.

For approximately ten years the parish worshipped at Saint Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Cottonwood Heights, a generous arrangement that sustained the community through its formative years while it grew from sixty families to more than two hundred. The parish is dedicated to Saint Anna, the mother of the Theotokos and the maternal grandmother of Jesus Christ, whose feast days on July 25 and September 9 anchor the community's patronal celebrations and whose name connects the parish to the family of the Lord Himself.

The transformation of the parish's permanent home is its own parable of faith. In 2018, the parish's founding pastor identified the former Western Garden and Atrium Center at 9201 South 1300 East in Sandy as the future home of Saint Anna. What had sold seeds and trees would grow something else. Over the following years, through prayerful focus, communal generosity, and two years of construction, the building was transformed into a dedicated Orthodox sanctuary, with an icon screen, chandeliers, and hand-carved woodwork imported from Greece, and murals painted by iconographers from Athens that cover the walls with sacred imagery inscribed in English, a deliberate choice reflecting the parish's commitment to accessibility. On July 13, 2024, Archbishop Elpidophoros of America returned to Sandy to celebrate the Thyranoixia, the formal Opening of the Doors, in what he described as one of the historically significant events in the life of this young community.
