History

Saint John the Theologian Greek Orthodox Church of Webster, Texas traces its origins to the fall of 1988, when several Greek families living in the Clear Lake area who were members of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Houston approached the Cathedral's proistamenos, Father Lou Chistopoulos, about providing church services closer to home. The result was a Cathedral-sponsored outreach ministry to the Bay Area with once-a-month evening services held at the Chapel of Saint Paul's Catholic Church in Nassau Bay. The initial participants included Michael and Bebe Ballas, Aleck and Anastasia Bond, Manuel and Evangelia Gazis, Chris and Debbie Katerinakis, George and Jean Varsos, Spyros and Noula Varsos, and Connie Critzos, soon joined by Anthony and Barbara Lekkos, the Mike Lardas family, and others as word spread through the Clear Lake community.

From these monthly outreach services the community grew steadily, and in 1993 received a formal ecclesiastical charter establishing Saint John the Theologian as an independent Greek Orthodox parish serving Martin County and the surrounding region. In January 1994 the former Christian Science Church building at 202 North Walnut Street in Webster came up for sale, and the parish's Steering Committee moved quickly, inspecting the building and placing earnest money. The deal closed on January 24, 1994, and the community took possession in time to celebrate the first Heretismoi Services on March 18 and Holy Week and Pascha in the new church. By 1995 additional space was needed, and the Parish House on Henrietta Street behind the church was acquired, in part through the generous donation of the Cameron Foundation. In late 2004 the adjacent Bruk Academy property became available and was purchased as well, bringing the community one step closer to its long-range vision of a purpose-built Byzantine-style church on the site.

Saint John the Theologian Greek Orthodox Church at 202 North Walnut Street in Webster serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the Clear Lake area as the only Orthodox Christian parish between downtown Houston and Galveston, a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, home to a diverse community of which more than half are non-Greek, welcoming all who seek the ancient Orthodox Christian faith in the shadow of the Johnson Space Center.
