History
Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church of Austin, Texas was born from a vision and a gathering. In November 1985, the Reverend Nicholas Triantafilou, then Proistamenos of the Annunciation Cathedral in Houston, came to Austin to meet with a handful of Greek Orthodox families who felt called to establish the first Greek Orthodox church in the growing state capital. On November 10, 1985, Father Nicholas celebrated the first Divine Liturgy at Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church with thirty-six people in attendance. On December 9, 1985, Bishop Anthimos of Denver visited Austin and gave his blessing to proceed, and with that the Greek Orthodox mission of Austin was officially born.
From 1986 to 1991 the young community held Divine Liturgy in the parish hall of Resurrection Episcopal Church on Justin Lane, while simultaneously organizing fundraising efforts through monthly luncheons and participation in the Austin Pecan Street Festival. In 1988, at the recommendation of Father Nicholas, the membership voted to officially name the community the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, celebrating its patronal feast on August 6, the Feast of the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor. In 1990 the community purchased its current 4.2-acre property, and in 1991 the Ladies Philoptochos Society was established. That same year, while the first building was under construction, the faithful celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the open air under the oak trees on the property. In 1993, Mount Tabor Hall was completed and Divine Liturgy moved to the new facilities at what became the parish's permanent home at 414 St. Stephen's School Road.
The parish has continued to grow in the decades since, expanding its facilities and ministries to serve one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. A new 14,720-square-foot multiuse event center with banquet hall, classrooms, kitchen, and administrative offices was completed in 2023, reflecting the community's growth and its commitment to serving the Austin area for generations to come.
Today, Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church stands at 414 St. Stephen's School Road in Austin as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, host of the beloved annual Austin Greek Festival and a vibrant, diverse, and growing center of Orthodox Christian life in the Texas Hill Country.
