History

The first recorded Greeks in Corpus Christi arrived in 1880, young men who had married into local Irish families and worked as sailors and fishermen along the Texas Gulf Coast. Over the following decades more Greek families followed, many of them driven to South Texas by racial violence in East Texas, where the Ku Klux Klan had actively campaigned to chase Greek and other Eastern European immigrants from their communities. By the 1920s and 1930s, the Greek families of Corpus Christi had put down roots and established the restaurants and cafés that sustained them economically and gave them a visible presence in the life of the city.

In May 1936, enough Greek Orthodox faithful had gathered in Corpus Christi to form a temporary committee to explore organizing a parish under the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese. That same year, a group of women from the Greek community formed what would become the Delphi Club, the primary organ sustaining Greek culture and social life in the city through the years before the church existed. The Delphi Club held Bible studies, sold baked goods, and raised funds steadily, the prayers of the faithful answered in 1950 when Father Emmanuel Panos became the first priest to open the doors of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. The priest from San Antonio created the iconography for the church that year, enriching the new sanctuary with sacred images that gave it its Orthodox character from the very beginning.

Saint Nicholas was formally consecrated in 1971 by Bishop John of Thermon with Father Ambrose Giannoukos, the parish's longest-serving pastor, presiding. The annual Greek Festival, which began in the 1960s as a humble bake sale, grew into one of downtown Corpus Christi's most anticipated annual events, drawing the broader community into the parish's orbit for Greek food, traditional dance, and church tours for nearly six decades. Saint Nicholas holds the distinction of being the only Orthodox Christian parish in Corpus Christi, a city of some 300,000 people that serves as the gateway to Padre Island National Seashore.

Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the Coastal Bend as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a community that has evolved from one of South Texas's most insular immigrant enclaves into a diverse congregation where the Lord's Prayer is prayed in multiple languages and nearly half the faithful trace their roots not to Greece but to many other nations.
