History

Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church of Loveland, Colorado was founded on November 25, 2001, the feast day of Saint Katherine of Alexandria, when a handful of families committed themselves to establishing an Orthodox parish in Northern Colorado. In those first years a relatively small number of Christians called Saint Spyridon home, gathering wherever space could be found as the community worked toward permanence. Through the dedication, sacrifice, and love for Christ of those founding members, the parish began to blossom steadily, and after several moves it planted itself at its present home on West 29th Street in Loveland, where the first service was held on August 5, 2018.

From that founding handful of families the parish has grown into a vibrant community of several hundred, drawing together Orthodox Christians from Greek, Serbian, and many other backgrounds alongside a substantial and growing number of converts from Roman Catholic, Protestant, and other Christian traditions who have found in Orthodoxy the fullness of the ancient apostolic faith. Services are conducted almost entirely in English, reflecting a community shaped from its earliest days by a vision of Orthodox Christianity as a universal faith rather than an ethnic tradition. That outward-facing vision has made Saint Spyridon one of the most actively evangelistic Orthodox communities in the Mountain West, committed to reaching those in Northern Colorado who have not yet encountered the ancient Church.

The parish is dedicated to Saint Spyridon of Trimythous, the fourth-century Cypriot shepherd who became bishop and attended the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325, whose humility, piety, and miraculous gifts made him one of the most beloved saints in the Orthodox world, and whose incorrupt relics rest on the island of Corfu. His feast day on December 12 is the patronal celebration of the Loveland community.

Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church at 807 West 29th Street in Loveland serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of Northern Colorado as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
