History
Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of North Wildwood, New Jersey was founded in 1968 by a small group of Greek immigrants who sought to establish an Orthodox Christian community on the Jersey Shore. It is the only Orthodox church serving Cape May County, ministering to the faithful of the southernmost reaches of New Jersey for more than half a century.
The church occupies a setting unlike almost any other Orthodox parish in America. Located on Saint Demetrios Street in the Angelsea section of North Wildwood, the building sits on the Hereford Inlet overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, earning it a cherished local nickname: the Church on the Ocean. Each January on the Feast of Theophany the parish continues the ancient tradition of blessing the Atlantic Ocean, an observance open to all that draws visitors from across the region to witness one of the oldest rituals in Orthodox Christian practice performed against the backdrop of the Jersey Shore.
The parish is known for its welcoming spirit and diversity, attracting worshippers from all Orthodox jurisdictions and from communities across the country, particularly during the summer months when the Shore fills with visitors. Services are conducted in English, reflecting the community's commitment to accessibility and its Pan-Orthodox character.
Today, Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church stands at 321 Saint Demetrios Street in North Wildwood as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a small but vibrant community serving the faithful of Cape May County with the beauty and continuity of the ancient Orthodox Christian faith by the sea.
