History
Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of Clifton, New Jersey traces its origins to Passaic, the neighboring city that stood at the height of its industrial power in the early twentieth century. During the earliest years of Greek migration to America, at a time when Greece's borders were still shifting and the Ottoman Empire was collapsing, a small group of Greek Orthodox immigrants gathered what resources they could and consecrated a new church to serve the spiritual needs of their growing community. That parish, born in Passaic, celebrated its centennial in 2021 and predates by one year the formal establishment of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America as an eparchy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
The community eventually relocated to Clifton, where it found a permanent home at 818 Valley Road and grew into one of the most vibrant Greek Orthodox parishes in northern New Jersey. The church serves not only the Greek Orthodox faithful of Clifton but also draws worshippers from the surrounding communities of Little Falls, Passaic, Paterson, Woodland Park, Elmwood Park, Garfield, Lyndhurst, and Rutherford.
