History

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint John the Theologian in Tenafly, New Jersey has been a house of worship since 1968, established to serve the Greek Orthodox faithful of Northern Bergen County in the communities across the Hudson River from New York City. From those founding years the Cathedral has grown into a vibrant center of faith, fellowship, and philanthropy, sustaining a full range of parish ministries that include a Greek School with more than 160 enrolled students, a Catechism School, HOPE youth program, and a parish dance group rooted in the Hellenic cultural tradition.

The Cathedral bears the name of Saint John the Apostle, Evangelist, and Theologian, the Beloved Disciple of Christ who remained at the foot of the Cross until the end, who wrote the fourth Gospel, three Epistles, and the Book of Revelation on the island of Patmos, and who is called the Theologian because of the profound spiritual depth of his writings. He is venerated as the Apostle of Love, having been the first to write in his epistles that God is love, and the Cathedral's feast day on September 26 is celebrated with hierarchical solemnity each year.

The Cathedral holds a position of particular significance within the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey as the Metropolitan Cathedral, the episcopal see of the Metropolitan of New Jersey. On September 16, 2023, His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey was enthroned at the Cathedral, and on September 17 celebrated his first Hierarchical Divine Liturgy there as the new Metropolitan, marking the beginning of a new era in the Cathedral's history and its continued role as the spiritual center of the Metropolis.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint John the Theologian at 353 East Clinton Avenue in Tenafly serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of Northern Bergen County as the seat of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, the mother church of the Metropolis whose jurisdiction extends across New Jersey, the Greater Philadelphia area, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia.
