History

Saint Anna Greek Orthodox Church of Flemington, New Jersey holds a distinctive place among Greek Orthodox parishes in America: it is one of only three parishes in the United States dedicated to Saint Anna, the mother of the Theotokos and maternal grandmother of Jesus Christ, whose feast days fall on July 25 and September 9. The community traces its founding to 2002, when the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in Hunterdon County, bringing Greek Orthodox worship to a corner of New Jersey that had none.

In those early years the parish, known initially as the Greek Orthodox Parish of Hunterdon County, worshipped wherever space could be found, including a home owned by the Mavrode family, Razberry's Banquet Hall owned by Dino Orginos, and most significantly the Allerton United Methodist Church, whose pastor Lynn Mears generously offered the congregation use of the building for seven years. In January 2010, the permanent charter was granted and the parish received its official name, Saint Anna Greek Orthodox Church. That same year, with the blessing of Metropolitan Evangelos and the generous support of grand benefactor Nicholas J. Bouras, the parish purchased twelve acres of land on Voorhees Corner Road in Raritan Township. Metropolitan Evangelos blessed and dedicated the property on May 16, 2010.

Archbishop Demetrios and Metropolitan Evangelos presided over groundbreaking ceremonies on September 17, 2011, and on June 23, 2013, the Thyranoixia, or Door Opening ceremony, was celebrated, marking the parish's entry into its permanent home. In 2018 a beautification project enriched the interior with new iconography. In January 2026, following the rapid completion of a Consecration Fund drive, Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey presided over the ceremonial burning of the church mortgage, with the parish celebrating the final payoff of $300,000 and launching its Path to Consecration campaign in anticipation of the church's formal consecration.

Saint Anna Greek Orthodox Church at 85 Voorhees Corner Road in Flemington serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of Hunterdon County as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a community of more than 150 families whose growth from a rented hall to a permanent home reflects the deep faith of the people who built it.
