History

Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Williamsburg, Virginia is one of the newest Greek Orthodox parishes in the country, yet in a remarkably short time it has established itself as a thriving and distinctive community in the heart of historic Williamsburg. The parish was officially established in 2014, with Very Rev. Fr. Ambrose Bitziadis-Bowers serving as its first presiding priest and leading the community through its founding year and early growth.

From the beginning, the parish distinguished itself not only by its worship life but by its investment in the surrounding community. On the same campus as the church, the parish developed the Williamsburg Hellenic Center, a full-service event and conference facility offering over 11,700 square feet of sophisticated reception space. The Center has become a destination in the greater Williamsburg area for wedding receptions, galas, corporate meetings, and special events, serving both the parish and the broader public while also providing a vital source of support for the church's ministry and programs.

In March 2024, the parish celebrated its tenth anniversary as a full parish, a milestone honored by the visit of His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, who presided over a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy and joined the community for a celebratory gala that evening. In his remarks, the Archbishop praised the St. Demetrios community for its remarkable achievements in such a short span of time, underscoring the importance of parishes like St. Demetrios in bringing the healing and authentic witness of the Orthodox Christian faith to new communities across America.
