History
Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of Albuquerque, New Mexico stands in the historic Huning Highlands neighborhood, one of Albuquerque's most architecturally significant districts, where it has served as the anchor of Greek Orthodox and Eastern Orthodox life in the state for generations. For much of its history, Saint George was the only Orthodox church in all of New Mexico, bearing the weight and privilege of that singular role for the faithful of an entire state.
A pivotal chapter in the parish's life began in 1974, when the Reverend Father Demetrius T. Dogias was assigned as parish priest. Father Dogias proved instrumental in reviving and growing the Saint George community, and in 1975 he and the parish council founded the annual Albuquerque Grecian Festival, conceived as a way to bring the Saint George family together around a shared celebration of Greek culture and Orthodox faith. The festival grew steadily over the decades into one of Albuquerque's most beloved annual events, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025.
Today, Saint George Greek Orthodox Church stands at 308 High Street SE in Albuquerque as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, welcoming Orthodox Christians from across the greater Albuquerque area and continuing its long tradition as the heart of Orthodoxy in New Mexico.
