History

Saint Basil the Great Greek Orthodox Church of Houston, Texas was established to bring the ancient Orthodox Christian faith to the western suburbs of one of America's largest and most diverse cities. The parish is named for one of the most beloved figures in the history of Orthodox Christianity, Saint Basil the Great, the fourth-century Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia whose theological writings, liturgical contributions, and social ministries left an indelible mark on the Church. Saint Basil organized monastic communities, championed care for the poor and sick through the establishment of hospitals and hospices, and stood boldly against the Arian heresy at personal risk during the reign of Emperor Valens. The Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil, celebrated ten times throughout the Orthodox liturgical year, is largely his own work, making his name and memory present in Orthodox worship across the globe every year.
