History
Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of Lowell, Massachusetts was established in 1928 by Greek Orthodox families in the city who sought a second Greek Orthodox parish to serve their growing community alongside the historic Holy Trinity Church. The newly formed parish first found a home in the former Worthen Baptist Church, which served as its house of worship for nearly half a century.
In 1973, tragedy struck when a fire destroyed the Worthen Baptist building. But adversity brought with it an unexpected gift. That same year, Grace Universalist Church, a magnificent 1896 building at 44 Princeton Boulevard in the Highlands neighborhood of Lowell, became available for purchase. Saint George acquired it, and the building was renovated for Greek Orthodox use, including the installation of an iconostasis and the addition of Orthodox iconography. The transformation gave the parish one of the most architecturally distinguished church buildings of any Greek Orthodox community in New England.
The building Saint George now calls home is a landmark in its own right. Built in 1895 and 1896, it is an eclectic masterpiece of Romanesque, Beaux Arts, and Classical Revival architectural details. Its most singular feature is a 70-foot masonry dome, the largest existing masonry dome in Massachusetts, designed by the celebrated engineer Rafael Guastavino Sr. and supervised during construction by his son Rafael Guastavino Jr. The Guastavino Tile Arch System, patented in 1885, was employed in some of the great civic buildings of the American Beaux Arts era, including the Registry Hall at Ellis Island and the dome of St. John the Divine in New York. To have such a dome as the canopy of an Orthodox church is a fitting convergence of architectural grandeur and sacred purpose. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. Its Facebook page describes it as a replica of the Hagia Sophia, a reflection of how the dome and Byzantine character of the interior evoke that great church of Constantinople.
Today, Saint George Greek Orthodox Church stands at 44 Princeton Boulevard as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston, serving the faithful of Lowell and the surrounding Merrimack Valley in a building of extraordinary beauty and historical significance.
