History

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church was founded in 1922 in Trenton, New Jersey by forty families, most of them immigrants from the Greek islands of Andros and Chios. From rented space in the early years, the community took its first permanent step in 1924 when a home at 106 Jackson Street in Trenton was purchased and renovated into their first church. For nearly three decades the Jackson Street church served the growing parish, until by 1952 the congregation had outgrown it entirely. The parish then purchased the Second Presbyterian Church at Mercer and Market Streets in Trenton, renovating it for Orthodox worship and giving the community a more substantial home in the heart of the city.

The parish's growth continued through the following decades, and by 1969 the General Assembly approved the purchase of a new property at 1200 Klockner Road in Hamilton, marking the community's move to the suburbs where so many of its families had relocated. The new complex was completed in three phases: the church building, the community center, and the cultural center, each phase representing a further investment by the faithful in the parish's future. The church was formally consecrated in 2017, completing a journey that had begun nearly a century earlier on Jackson Street in Trenton. The parish celebrated its centennial in 2022, marking a hundred years of Hellenic Orthodox life in Mercer County.

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church at 1200 Klockner Road in Hamilton serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of Mercer County as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a community of nearly 400 families that has carried the traditions of Andros and Chios across a century of American life.
