History
Saint Markella Greek Orthodox Church of Wantagh, New York was founded by Greek immigrants who settled on Long Island's South Shore and sought to build a spiritual home for their growing community. As their numbers increased, they pooled their savings and purchased a wooden structure, which they remodeled into a house of worship. Ten years later the community celebrated its first formal religious service together and was incorporated and chartered, giving the parish its official standing.
As the community continued to grow, the original building became inadequate for the needs of an expanding congregation. Land was purchased and a new church was constructed and dedicated, which remains the parish's house of worship to this day. A school building consisting of four classrooms was erected adjacent to the church to serve the religious and cultural education of the community's children, continuing the tradition of passing the Greek Orthodox faith and Hellenic heritage to the next generation.
Today, Saint Markella Greek Orthodox Church stands at 1960 Jones Avenue North in Wantagh as a parish of the Direct Archdiocesan District of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, serving the Orthodox Christian faithful of the South Shore of Nassau County on Long Island.
