History

Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of West Babylon, New York began with the vision of two local businessmen, Michael Christopher and George Gabriel, who decided to establish a Greek Orthodox parish to serve the Greek families scattered across the South Shore of central Long Island. A general assembly meeting was arranged at the Sunrise Catering House in West Babylon, drawing together several families interested in forming a new community of their own.

In the spring of 1959, that dream materialized into reality when the Archdiocese granted a charter for the newly formed parish. The humble Seventh Day Adventist Church on Fire Island Avenue in Babylon served as the backdrop for the very first Divine Liturgy, led by the Reverend Father George Kambanis, the parish's founding priest. As the young community grew, two adjoining stores on Little East Neck Road in West Babylon were rented, with one converted into a sanctuary and the other given over to Sunday School and Greek School classes.

The years that followed brought both struggle and steady growth. The Ladies Philoptochos Society was established, Greek School and Catechism programs took root, and various youth groups were founded, knitting the parish together into a true community. A devastating fire struck in 1967, but the congregation's resolve only grew stronger in its aftermath, leading to the acquisition of a new property on Great East Neck Road, the former site of a Temple, where the Church Blessing was officiated at the newly purchased location.

Years of growth on the new property culminated in the construction of the Saint Nicholas Shrine Church, completed in 1989, giving the parish the permanent home it had worked toward for three decades.

Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at 200 Great East Neck Road in West Babylon serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the South Shore of Long Island as a parish of the Direct Archdiocesan District of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, guided by the patronage of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors.
