History
Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church of West Nyack, New York was established in 1962, founded to serve the Greek Orthodox faithful of Rockland County as Greek families settled in the communities west of the Hudson River and north of New York City. The parish holds the distinction of being the only Greek Orthodox church in Rockland County, a community that has carried the Orthodox Christian faith to this corner of the lower Hudson Valley for more than six decades.
The parish is dedicated to two of the most significant figures in the history of Christianity, Constantine the Great, the Roman emperor whose Edict of Milan in 313 established religious tolerance for Christians throughout the empire and who gathered the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea in 325, and his mother Saint Helena, who journeyed to Jerusalem and is venerated throughout the Orthodox world for her discovery of the True Cross. Together they are celebrated each year on May 21 as Equal to the Apostles, a dedication that gives the West Nyack community its patronal feast and connects it to one of the most beloved celebrations of the Orthodox calendar.
Through more than sixty years of parish life the community has built a full institutional life of worship, Greek School, Sunday School, and youth programs, hosting an annual Greek Festival that has become a beloved Rockland County tradition and sustaining the kind of family-centered, faith-focused community that its founders envisioned when they established the only Orthodox parish in the county.
