History
Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of Lynchburg, Virginia serves as the Orthodox Christian presence in the Piedmont region of central Virginia, bringing the ancient faith to a city better known for its association with Liberty University and its long history as a center of religion in the American South. The parish is a small but welcoming community that has grown steadily since its inception, committed to bearing witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ as expressed in the apostolic tradition and worship of the Orthodox Church.
The church is dedicated to Saint George the Great Martyr and Trophy-Bearer, the beloved third-century soldier and Christian martyr born in Cappadocia who became one of the most universally venerated saints in the Orthodox world. His feast day on April 23 is celebrated each year as the parish's patronal feast, and relics of the saint are enshrined within the altar table as a reminder of the saints who intercede for the faithful who worship in their memory.
