History

Saint Panteleimon Chapel of Lexington, Michigan serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the Thumb region of the Michigan shoreline on Lake Huron, an outpost of the ancient faith in one of the most rural and scenic corners of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Detroit. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Panteleimon the Great Martyr and Healer, the beloved third-century physician of Nicomedia who devoted his medical gifts to the service of the poor and the suffering, healing the sick through prayer and the grace of Christ rather than medicine alone. For this witness he was martyred under the Emperor Maximian in the year 305, and the Orthodox Church honors his feast day on July 27, venturing him as one of the Holy Unmercenaries alongside Saint Cosmas and Damian.

The chapel at 7143 Cedar Road gathers the Orthodox faithful of the Lexington area each Sunday for Orthros and Divine Liturgy, bringing the ancient sacramental and liturgical life of the Eastern Church to a lakeside community far from the larger Greek Orthodox parishes of metropolitan Detroit. It stands as part of the network of Council of Orthodox Christian Churches of Metropolitan Detroit, reflecting the Pan-Orthodox character of Orthodox Christian life in the broader region.
