History
The Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church was founded in 1980, when a very small but determined group of Orthodox Christians set out to establish a Greek Orthodox parish in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County. With great enthusiasm and contributions from the founding members, the group purchased an existing church building at 108 Warner Avenue in Roslyn Heights, and on February 15, 1981, the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the new community's first home. On July 1, 1982, the parish received its first full-time priest, Father Christopher Metropoulos, and on March 1, 1984, Father Dennis Strouzas was appointed as the third full-time priest, a pastor who would serve the community and shape its life for many years.
After more than twenty-five years at its Roslyn Heights location, the Archangel Michael community had grown beyond what the original building could accommodate. On August 6, 2004, a ten-acre property at 100 Fairway Drive in Port Washington was purchased, and on September 25, 2006, Archbishop Demetrios of America presided over the groundbreaking for the new church to be built on the site. Construction commenced in the spring of 2007, and on October 4, 2009, the first Divine Liturgy at the new location was celebrated in the Fellowship Hall, which had been redesigned as a temporary sanctuary while the permanent church was completed.
On December 22, 2012, Archbishop Demetrios returned to Port Washington to celebrate the Thyranoixia, the Opening of the Doors, when the doors of the permanent sanctuary were opened for the first time, ushering in a new era for the community. The church was formally consecrated and dedicated to God on April 25, 2015, in a ceremony presided over by Archbishop Demetrios, completing the journey from a small determined founding group in a Roslyn Heights storefront church to a consecrated sanctuary with a new educational facility housing a Preschool, Greek School, Sunday School, and Athletics Center on ten acres in Port Washington.
