History
The Twelve Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church of Duluth, Minnesota was founded in 1918 by Greek immigrants who came to Duluth in the early decades of the twentieth century, drawn by the shipping, mining, and industrial economy of the Lake Superior port city. From that immigrant founding the parish has grown over more than a century into one of the most genuinely diverse Orthodox Christian communities in the upper Midwest, with people from more than two dozen different ethnic backgrounds having been part of the congregation since its founding.
The parish occupies its home at 632 East 2nd Street in the heart of downtown Duluth, worshipping in a candlelit sanctuary that connects the faithful of the Lake Superior city to liturgical traditions stretching back to the earliest centuries of the Christian Church. The parish describes itself as a Greek Orthodox Church because it was people of Greek heritage who brought the ancient Christian faith to Duluth, while embracing the universal character of that faith for all who enter: more than half of the present congregation are converts to Orthodoxy, drawn to the Church as adults through their search for a rich liturgical and worship life rooted in the most ancient Christian traditions.
