History

The Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church of Florence, South Carolina was established in 1962, bringing the ancient Orthodox Christian faith to the Pee Dee region of the Carolina coastal plain. The parish has proclaimed the Orthodox Christian tradition at its home on South Cashua Drive since those founding years, serving as the center of Greek Orthodox and Hellenic community life in Florence and the surrounding counties of eastern South Carolina.

 

The parish is dedicated to the Transfiguration of Our Savior, the great feast celebrated each August 6 when the Orthodox Church commemorates the moment on Mount Tabor when Christ appeared to the Apostles Peter, James, and John in His divine glory, His face shining like the sun. That dedication gives the community its deepest theological identity, a parish oriented toward the uncreated light of God that shines in the Church's sacramental and liturgical life.
