About Greek Orthodox Churches in America
The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is the largest Eastern Orthodox Christian body in the United States, comprising approximately 540 parishes and more than 800 priests serving faithful across all fifty states. Headquartered in New York City, the Archdiocese is an eparchy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and is led by Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, who serves simultaneously as Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America and Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Greek Orthodox Christianity arrived in the Americas as early as 1768, when the first Greek colonists landed at Saint Augustine, Florida. The first organized Greek Orthodox community in the Americas was established in New Orleans in 1864 by a small colony of Greek merchants. The first permanent parish was founded in New York City in 1892, the congregation that became today's Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and the seat of the Archbishop of America. The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America was incorporated in 1921 and officially recognized by the State of New York in 1922, establishing the institutional framework that has governed Greek Orthodox life in this country ever since.

The Archdiocese is organized into nine regional jurisdictions: the Direct Archdiocesan District, centered in New York and administered directly by the Archbishop, and eight metropolises covering the rest of the country.
