Feast of the Holy Protection of the Theotokos

Feast of the Holy Protection of the Theotokos
The Feast of the Holy Protection of the Theotokos is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as the commemoration of the Virgin Mary’s protection and intercession for the faithful. This feast day is celebrated on October 1 and remembers the appearance of the Theotokos during a time of danger, when she was seen protecting the people with her veil.
The Vision in Constantinople
The feast originates from a vision that took place in the 10th century in Constantinople during an all night vigil at the Church of Blachernae, where a sacred relic of the Virgin Mary’s veil was kept.
According to tradition, St. Andrew the Fool for Christ and his disciple Epiphanios witnessed the Virgin Mary appear above the congregation in the church.
The Protection of the Theotokos
During the vision, the Theotokos was seen praying for the people and spreading her veil (or omophorion) over the faithful as a sign of protection.
This moment symbolized her role as a spiritual protector and intercessor for Christians in times of hardship and danger.
A Celebration of Divine Protection
The Feast of the Holy Protection of the Theotokos celebrates the belief that the Mother of God continues to watch over and protect the Church. The feast emphasizes prayer, trust in God’s care, and the intercession of the Theotokos.
In many Orthodox traditions, the feast also highlights the importance of seeking the protection of the Virgin Mary through prayer.
