St. Gregory the Illuminator Bishop of Armenia Feast Day and Greek Name Day
St. Gregory the Illuminator, Bishop of Armenia, is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as the missionary who brought Christianity to Armenia and became the first bishop of the Armenian Church. His feast day is celebrated on September 30, and on this day people named Gregory, Grigorios, Gregoris, Grigoris, Grigor, and Greg, among other variations, celebrate their Greek name day.
Who Was St. Gregory the Illuminator
St. Gregory the Illuminator lived during the third and fourth centuries and is remembered for his role in spreading Christianity throughout Armenia.
He was born into a noble family but later devoted his life to the Christian faith. Gregory eventually came into conflict with the Armenian king Tiridates III, who persecuted Christians during that time.
Imprisonment and Faith
Because Gregory refused to renounce his faith, he was imprisoned for many years in a deep pit known as Khor Virap. According to tradition, he remained there for more than a decade while continuing to pray and remain faithful to Christ.
His endurance and devotion became widely known among the Christian community.
Conversion of Armenia
Eventually Gregory was released and played a central role in the conversion of King Tiridates III to Christianity. Through Gregory’s teaching and influence, Armenia became the first nation to officially adopt Christianity as a state religion in the early fourth century.
Because of this achievement, Gregory became known as the “Illuminator,” meaning the one who brought the light of Christianity to Armenia.
Greek Name Day for Gregory
Because St. Gregory the Illuminator is commemorated on September 30, this date is also the Greek name day for:
