St. Thaddeus Jude, Apostle is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ who helped spread the Christian faith after the Resurrection. His feast day is celebrated on June 19, and on this day people named Jude, Judas, Thaddeus, Thaddaios, Thaddeos, and Tadeo, among other variations, celebrate their Greek name day.

Who Was St. Thaddeus Jude

St. Thaddeus, also known as Jude, was one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus Christ. In the New Testament he is sometimes referred to as Jude, son of James, to distinguish him from Judas Iscariot.

He is also traditionally identified as the author of the Epistle of Jude, a short letter in the New Testament that warns Christians about false teachings and encourages believers to remain faithful.

Missionary Work of the Apostle

After the Resurrection and the spread of the early Church, St. Thaddeus traveled to preach the Gospel in different regions. Tradition holds that he carried the Christian message to areas including Mesopotamia, Syria, and Persia.

Through his missionary work he helped establish early Christian communities and strengthen the growing Church.

Martyrdom

Like many of the Apostles, St. Thaddeus eventually suffered martyrdom for his faith. According to Christian tradition, he was killed while preaching the Gospel after refusing to abandon Christianity.

His courage and devotion to spreading the message of Christ made him one of the honored Apostles of the early Church.

Greek Name Day for Thaddeus and Jude

Because St. Thaddeus Jude, Apostle is commemorated on June 19, this date is also the Greek name day for:

Tadeo

In Greek culture, celebrating a name day is often just as important as celebrating a birthday. Friends and family commonly offer well wishes or visits to honor the person whose name is being celebrated.
