St. Theodore the Sanctified Feast Day and Greek Name Day

St. Theodore the Sanctified is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as a monk and spiritual leader who continued the monastic tradition established by St. Pachomios the Great. His feast day is celebrated on May 16, and on this day people named Theodoros, Theodore, Theo, Ted, Teddy, Theodora, Dora, and Dorothea, among other variations, celebrate their Greek name day.

Who Was St. Theodore the Sanctified

St. Theodore lived during the 4th century in Egypt and became one of the most respected disciples of St. Pachomios the Great, the founder of organized communal monasticism.

From a young age he devoted himself to a life of prayer and spiritual discipline, eventually joining the monastic community established by Pachomios.

Leader of the Pachomian Monasteries

St. Theodore became one of the most trusted followers of St. Pachomios and was later entrusted with important responsibilities within the growing monastic communities.

Because of his wisdom, humility, and dedication, he eventually became a leading figure in guiding the monasteries after the death of St. Pachomios.

A Life of Holiness

St. Theodore was known for his deep spiritual life and strict devotion to the monastic rule. His leadership helped strengthen the structure of early monastic communities and preserve the teachings of his spiritual father.

Because of his holiness and dedication to the monastic life, the Church later honored him with the title “the Sanctified.”

Greek Name Day for Theodore

Because St. Theodore the Sanctified is commemorated on May 16, this date is also the Greek name day for:

In Greek culture, celebrating a name day is often just as important as celebrating a birthday. Friends and family commonly offer well wishes or visits to honor the person whose name is being celebrated.
