St. Thomas the Apostle Feast Day and Greek Name Day

 

St. Thomas the Apostle is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ and a devoted missionary who helped spread the Christian faith. His feast day is celebrated on October 6, and on this day people named Thomas, Thoma, Tomas, Tom, and Tommy, among other variations, celebrate their Greek name day.

 

Who Was St. Thomas the Apostle

St. Thomas the Apostle was one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus Christ to follow Him and spread His teachings. In the Gospel accounts, Thomas is often remembered for initially doubting the Resurrection of Christ until he saw the risen Lord with his own eyes.

Because of this moment, he is sometimes referred to as “Doubting Thomas.”

 

Witness to the Resurrection

After the Resurrection, Jesus appeared to the apostles and invited Thomas to touch the wounds in His hands and side. When Thomas witnessed this, he declared, “My Lord and my God.”

This moment became one of the most powerful testimonies to the truth of the Resurrection in the New Testament.

 

Missionary Work

Following Pentecost, St. Thomas traveled widely to preach the Gospel. According to Christian tradition, he carried the Christian message as far as India, where he helped establish early Christian communities.

His missionary work played an important role in spreading Christianity beyond the Roman world.
