Sts. Floros and Lavros Feast Day and Greek Name Day
Sts. Floros and Lavros are honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as twin martyrs who remained faithful to Christ and helped spread Christianity despite persecution. Their feast day is celebrated on August 18, and on this day people named Floros, Floris, Florentios, Florentia, Lavros, Lavrentios, Lavrentis, and Lavrentia, among other variations, celebrate their Greek name day.
Who Were Sts. Floros and Lavros
Sts. Floros and Lavros were Christian brothers who lived during the early centuries of Christianity. According to tradition, they were skilled stonemasons who worked on construction projects in different regions of the Roman Empire.
During their work, they openly shared their Christian faith and encouraged others to follow Christ.
Their Witness to the Faith
While building a pagan temple, Floros and Lavros helped convert many workers and local residents to Christianity. Instead of dedicating the building to pagan worship, the newly converted Christians destroyed the idols and dedicated the structure to the worship of the true God.
This act angered the local authorities, who punished the converts and eventually ordered the execution of Floros and Lavros.
Martyrdom and Veneration
The brothers were executed for refusing to abandon their Christian faith. Because of their courage and devotion, they became widely honored in the Orthodox Church as holy martyrs.
In many Orthodox traditions, they are also considered protectors of animals and livestock, and farmers often pray to them for the protection of their animals.
