How Many Days Should I Spend on Fournoi?

Fournoi covers well over two days for both peninsulas, and three to four let the island's beaches, ancient sites, and quieter pace fully settle in.

Fournoi fills a first day easily in Chora, also called Kambos, the main village where tavernas, bakeries, and shops selling traditional products line the harbor. The Cyclopean wall on the Hill of Ai Giorgis, tracing back to an ancient acropolis, sits close enough for an easy walk after settling in.

A second day belongs to the ancient marble quarry at Petrokopio, which once supplied stone to Miletus and Ephesus, with column fragments still scattered across the beach below it, and the ruins of a temple to Poseidon at Agia Triada near Chrysomilia round out a day focused on the island's older history.

A third day suits the beaches, most reached by scooter or car along the single 18 kilometer road connecting Chrysomilia in the north to Agios Ioannis in the south. Psili Ammos, close to Chora, gives an easy first swim, while Kassidi, reachable by a steep 600-step descent, offers a quieter cove and a seasonal taverna at the bottom worth the climb back up.

A fourth day works well for a boat trip to Thymaina, the archipelago's second inhabited island, where a single fishing village and the beach at Keramidou give a slower day out on the water, and fresh lobster pasta, the island's signature dish, is worth building an evening around.

Fournoi has no airport, and most travelers connect through Ikaria or Samos by ferry, both roughly 30 to 45 minutes away.
