How Many Days Should I Spend on Ikaria?
Ikaria covers well over three days for the beaches and villages, and five to seven let the island's slower rhythm, hot springs, and hiking trails fully take hold.
Ikaria fills a first day easily around Armenistis, a good base on the island's northwest coast, with Messakti and Livadi beaches close by and Nas, at the mouth of a river flowing into the sea, worth timing for sunset and dinner above the bay.
A second day belongs to Magganitis and Seychelles Beach, reachable by a rocky path down or a seasonal boat, followed by an evening in Christos Raches, a mountain village that famously keeps shops open late into the night rather than during the day.
A third day suits the coastal village of Therma, where naturally radioactive hot springs sit beside Roman-era baths still used much as they were centuries ago, along with Agios Kirykos, the island's capital, and the Tower of Drakano further along the eastern coast.
A fourth or fifth day works well for hiking part of the Chalaris Gorge, or a shorter trail through the mountain villages around Raches, Pigi, and Theoktistis Monastery, tucked between massive boulders. A wine tasting at the Afianes winery, using clay jars buried in the ground in a method Homer once described, rounds out an evening well.
With additional days, a short ferry crosses to Fournoi, and Ikaria connects easily to Samos for anyone extending the trip further into the North Aegean.
Three days cover the beaches, Seychelles, and Christos Raches comfortably, five brings the hot springs, gorge hikes, and wine tasting into the trip properly, and seven lets the island's mountain villages and a possible Fournoi crossing round things out fully. Even a short three-day visit gives a real sense of the island's wild coastline, but Ikaria's slower pace gives real reason to give it more time than a rushed itinerary allows.
