Getting from Agios Efstratios to Patmos

If you are heading to Patmos from Agios Efstratios you are making your way from a small island in the northern Aegean to one of the most sacred islands in the Dodecanese group, where John the Apostle wrote the Book of Revelation and the 11th century monastery of Saint John the Theologian above Chora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Agios Efstratios to Patmos. The two islands are in completely different parts of Greece with no sea connection between them. Getting there means taking the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, which runs 4 times a week in summer and takes around 1 hour 30 minutes, flying to Athens and then taking the Piraeus to Patmos ferry, which runs 6 times a week and takes around 8 hours. The total journey takes the better part of two days.

Getting there by air

Patmos has no airport. The nearest airports are Leros and Kos. Taking the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, flying to Athens and then Athens to Leros, followed by the short ferry from Leros to Patmos taking around 1 hour, gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, fly to Athens and then fly to Leros and take the short ferry across to Patmos. It is the most practical approach. If you are traveling with a car, fly to Athens and take the overnight Piraeus to Patmos ferry, which takes your vehicle and arrives in the morning.
